Saatchi Eats: Jack’s Wife Freda

For this edition of Saatchi Eats we had a late lunch at Jack’s Wife Freda. This charming little restaurant on Carmine Street is a short walk from the office but feels like a world away. July in NYC can be hot, but the big open doors let in a welcome breeze and lots of light.

Watermelon is finally in season so we started with a variety of refreshing watermelon-based drinks.

Jack’s Wife Freda is Mediterranean so we made sure to try the Greek Salad and the Grilled Haloumi. The Greek Salad was made with kale creating a tasty twist and the dressing was light but flavorful. The display of the Grilled Haloumi was exquisite and delicate-looking, yet flavorful and well-salted which complimented the grapes and olive oil.

I ordered the Chicken Kebab which is laid on top of a bowl of couscous, chopped salad, and avocado. The result is a perfect summer lunch. I’ve decided the best eating strategy is to take the chicken off the kebab and mix it all together.

May ordered the Grain Bowl: Grain bowls are always great when you want a filling and a “kick of nutrition” kind-of lunch. The display was very appealing as the quinoa was underneath the sautéed kale, snow peas, asparagus, and summer vegetables topped with a soft hard-boiled egg. On the side, there was a soy-vinegerate dressing, which was tangy and transformed the salad into a more Asian dish than a Mediterranean dish. Every bite had a different taste so I never got tired of the flavor-thus I literally inhaled the grain bowl. I would definitely recommend it!

Lastly, Reid got the Prego Roll: A Portuguese skirt steak sandwich with garlic butter and the fries to match. A heavy meal that might leave you wanting to take a nap afterwards, but the melt in your mouth favoring with tender steak makes it worth its sleepy side effects.

It was a great lunch, and it looked as good as it tasted.
